How do I know if I have rats in the roof?

Common signs are scratching or running sounds in the ceiling at dusk and dawn, droppings around the manhole, gnaw marks on cables or stored items in the garage, and a stale, musky smell that wasn't there before.

Are rats actually dangerous, or just annoying?

Rodents chew electrical wiring (a real fire risk), contaminate stored food and insulation, and can carry diseases. Even a small population is worth dealing with quickly.

Can I just use supermarket baits?

Supermarket baits can knock down a small problem but often miss the access points and harbourage that keep rodents coming back. A documented inspection identifies the entry points so the fix lasts.
